How Much Do the Different Types of Dartboards Cost

One of the great things about it is that darts is not a costly hobby; you don’t really need a lot of expensive equipment. This holds true, especially for beginners.

The actual cost of a dartboard will vary depending on the type of dartboard you pick. We have bristle dartboards, soft tip dartboards, electronic dartboards, magnetic dartboards, and kids Velcro dartboards. So let’s take a look.

Bristle Dartboards (Steel Tip Dartboards)

Bristle (or steel tip) dartboards cost between $25 and $100. The price of bristle dartboards will vary depending on the quality of the bristle fibers, how tightly packed they are, the overall built quality of the dartboard. On average, you can expect to spend about $65 on a good bristle dartboard.

Dartboards With Cabinets

Dartboards with cabinets are going to be on the more expensive side.

After all, you will be buying more than a dartboard. The benefit of having a cabinet is that it provides protection for both your wall and dartboard. Dartboard cabinets offer some additional features like a scoreboard and a place to keep your darts and other accessories.

I will give some extra points to the cabinets since they are usually made of wood and look very stylish and have a great pub vibe.

Dartboards with a cabinet cost between $50 and $250, depending on the quality and type of the dartboard and the built quality and design of the cabinet. On average, you can expect to spend about $150 for a good dartboard with a cabinet.

Electronic dartboards—which can also be referred to as soft tip dartboards— tend to be the most expensive ones of the bunch.

Electronic dartboards cost between $30 and $300. The price will depend on the built quality and design, the number of games and game variations. On average, you can expect a good electronic dartboard to cost between $100 and $200.

Magnetic Dartboards

Magnetic dartboards are usually inexpensive, costing between $15 and $35. The price will depend on the way the dartboard is built, overall quality, and design. On average, you can expect to pay about $30 for a good magnetic dartboard.

Paper Dartboards

Paper dartboards are usually very inexpensive. They cost between $10 and $30 depending on the quality of the coiled paper.

Why Are There Price Fluctuations?

You may have noticed that the biggest fluctuations are found with electronic and freestanding dartboard.

There are various reasons why there are big price fluctuations with electronic dartboards. Of course, the reputation of the manufacturer will play a certain role, but the most important factors are the built quality, number of games and variations, features, and capabilities.

Freestanding steel tip dartboards can be quite cheap as they are basically a standing cabinet with a dartboard in it.

However, there are integrated freestanding electronic dartboards that are used in bars and pubs, which can offer multiple features and have different capabilities, hence why they can cost at least a few thousand dollars.

Steel tip dartboards are usually more closely priced, and frequently because of that, it is worth going for a higher-quality dartboard. The extra $20 or $30 is usually well worth spending.

Are There Additional Costs of Buying a Dartboard?

The prices you saw above are mostly base-line prices.

However, there may be some extra expenses.

Certain dartboards do come with additional accessories; however, not all of them do. So in some instances, you may need to buy at least a set of darts which—depending on your preferences—can add to the total cost of your dartboard.

Darts

In the beginning, you don’t really need a lot of accessories. This is the true beauty of darts—it is super to get into it.

However, I’d like to give you some additional information.

A set of three Soft tip darts can cost anywhere between $5 and $150 depending on the built quality, design, and the materials used for the making of the darts.

A set of three steel tip darts can cost between $7 and $250 depending on the design, the materials used, and the overall built quality of the darts.

Expensive darts do not make that much of a difference above a certain price point.

And with that being said for beginners and occasional (non-professional) players, a dart set in the 20 to 30-dollar range is usually more than enough.

This price range will ensure that you get the best bang for your buck without going overboard, spending too much money on something that will most likely not make any difference to your game at this point.

Wall Protection

If you are going to use steel tip darts (this can hold true even for soft tip darts as well), you may want to have some protection for your walls depending on where you will hang your dartboard.

Dartboard backings cost between $25 and $150 depending on the material used, the thickness, and the area of the wall it will protect. Typically you can expect to spend about $40 to $50 for a good, quality backboard that will offer good protection to your wall.

Dart Scoreboard

Chalk and dry erase darts scoreboards cost between $10 and $30 depending on the design and the way they can be used. Electronic dart scoreboards can cost as much as $50.

Other Dart Accessories

To start playing darts, at the absolute minimum, you need two things, a dartboard and a set of three darts. Everything else I would consider optional.

Both the wall backing and the scoreboard are not a must-have but can make your experience playing darts better. The same goes for other dart accessories like dart holders, dart mats and oche lines, dartboard cabinets, and so on.

How Much Does It Cost to Play Darts

Playing darts is one of the cheapest hobbies you can get into.

You need just a few things in order to start playing darts:

  • A dartboard; and
  • A set of darts.

The good thing is that both the dartboard and the darts do not cost a lot. You don’t necessarily need to invest a lot of money in them.

If you are a beginner, I would advise on spending less money. You don’t really need to jump all-in buying the most expensive accessories and dartboards. The jump in the return on investment between the averagely priced and the expensive dartboards and darts is not that big as it is in some other sports.

Darts is a sport of frequent practice and feel, and a more expensive set of darts, for example, may not really improve your skill as a beginner. In the beginning, it is more important to practice and play darts as frequently as possible.
