Tungsten darts vs Brass vs Nickel

There are a couple of basic materials from which the dart barrels are manufactured.

Brass. Most common, as it is the cheapest. Mostly used for home sets, and sometimes in bar sets. Because it is machine mass produced, the grip points tend to wear too fast, and the dart loses its initial characteristics. Also, the brass barrels are wider compared to tungsten barrels.

Nickel/Silver. Stronger and denser metal than brass. That makes the grip points more durable, they do not wear that fast. Can be a good choice for home use or beginners.

Tungsten. The hardest and the densest of all. Tungsten is heavy. Heavier than lead. That enables the manufacturers to make the barrel very thin. Thin barrel enables the dart to fly faster and in a straight line. The possibility of hitting another dart on the dartboard is reduced, and tighter grouping is enabled.

Tungsten is also very strong and durable. That makes it a great choice for barrels. One thing that barrels are intended for is gripping and holding. And that constant contact and pressure will make weaker materials wear off.  The results will be shifted weight and unbalanced flight pattern.

But that will not happen with tungsten. The constant use will not damage this material or make the barrel thinner. Recommended for everyone who wants the best possible results.

The higher the percentage of tungsten, the better. The higher percentage of tungsten also makes them more expensive darts.

Final Thoughts

If you have decided to buy tungsten darts you are probably already prepared to pay a little bit extra compared to other types.  But it is worth it. Once you go with tungsten, you don’t ever want to go back.  There must be a reason for that.
